The recipe for good sleep
A dog that sleeps badly behaves badly. Sleep is not laziness in dogs — it is most of their day, and it is the first thing a busy household breaks.
Why these ingredients
Adult dogs sleep around 12 to 14 hours a day, puppies up to 18 to 20, and seniors 14 to 16 with more broken rest. That is not a preference; it is the recovery their brain needs. A dog woken repeatedly through the day — by children, by a busy kitchen, by other pets — spends the evening in a state that looks like misbehaviour and is actually sleep debt.
The second issue is where they sleep. A dog needs a place where it will not be disturbed, and many households have none: the bed is in the traffic path, the crate is in the loudest room, and the dog is petted awake every time someone passes. Protecting one corner fixes more evening behaviour than any training plan.
The ingredients, with doses
A recipe needs amounts, not advice. Each line below is a habit with the dose that makes it work and the reason it is in the bowl.
| Ingredient | Dose | Why it is in here |
|---|---|---|
| Puppy, 8–16 weeks | 18–20 h a day | In short blocks. Overtired puppies bite and zoom — that is a nap problem, not a discipline problem. |
| Puppy, 4–12 months | 16–18 h a day | Still in blocks. Enforced naps in a quiet place stop most evening chaos. |
| Adult dog | 12–14 h a day | Split between night and daytime naps. |
| Senior dog | 14–16 h, more broken | Waking more at night is normal aging, but restlessness can also be pain. |
| A protected place | Always | One corner, out of the traffic, nobody touches the dog there. |
Method
- Count the interruptions before changing anything. Most owners are surprised by how often the dog gets woken.
- Pick a rest place out of the walking path and move the bed there. Then enforce it: nobody disturbs a dog on its bed.
- Give an hour of wind-down before the night: lights lower, no rough play, no training.
- For puppies, put naps on the schedule the way you put meals. Overtired is a real state and it looks like aggression.
- For seniors, raise the bed off cold floors and add a night light. Arthritis pain is worse when the house is cold.
- Reassess after two weeks. If the dog is still restless at night, that is a vet conversation.
What each part is doing
| Part | Job |
|---|---|
| Protected rest | Sleep that is not interrupted is the only kind that counts. |
| Blocked naps for puppies | Prevents the overtired biting that gets labelled as aggression. |
| Wind-down hour | Lowers arousal before night instead of fighting it at midnight. |
| Age-appropriate hours | Puppies and seniors need far more rest than owners expect. |
What to watch for
- A dog pacing at night, panting, or unable to settle is not being difficult. Pain, cognitive decline and thyroid problems all look like this.
- Sleeping more than usual, or sleeping but still tired, can be a medical sign.
- Do not use the crate as punishment and then expect the dog to relax in it. It stops being a rest place the first time something bad happens in it.
