Know how much to feed. Every single day.

Most homemade dog food goes wrong in one place: the amount. Too much and the weight creeps up. Too little and the dog loses muscle. Enter four facts — weight, age, neutered or not, activity level — and get the number, in grams, per meal.

The math starts from the resting energy requirement — 70 x weight in kg^0.75 — and applies a maintenance factor for age, neuter status and activity. The recipe is a starting point, not a complete diet, and this page never pretends otherwise. Ask your vet before changing what your dog eats.

Perla, an English Mastiff, and Moka, a Bernese Mountain Dog, waiting by their bowls

Perla and Moka

An English Mastiff and a Bernese Mountain Dog, and the reason this page exists. Every portion the calculator produces gets checked against what they actually eat — a mastiff and a bernese do not need the same bowl, and that is the whole point of measuring instead of guessing.

01

Weight, age, activity

Four facts. Weight in kilograms or pounds, age in months or years, whether your dog is neutered, and how active they really are — not how active you wish they were.

02

Get the energy number

Resting energy requirement is 70 × body weight in kg to the power of 0.75. Multiply by a life-stage factor and you have the calories for the day.

03

Turn it into grams

A cooked home diet runs around 1.3 kcal per gram, so the calories convert straight into how much food goes in the bowl, and how much goes in each bowl.

What this tool will not do

The honest part, before you trust the number.

It will not balance the diet

Calories are easy. Calcium, phosphorus, taurine, zinc and a dozen vitamins are not. A home-cooked diet needs a supplement formulated by a veterinarian, or a commercial completer. Feeding an unbalanced home diet for months causes damage that takes months to show and years to reverse.

It will not replace your vet

Kidney disease, heart disease, pancreatitis, diabetes — a generic recipe can make any of those worse. If your dog has a diagnosis, the tool stops and hands the numbers to your vet instead of inventing a diet.

It will not diagnose an allergy

You can tell it your dog reacts to chicken. It will route around chicken. That is not a diagnosis. Real food allergies are confirmed by a supervised elimination trial, and most of them turn out to be to an animal protein, not to grain.

It will not store your dog

Recipes to start from

Simple bases, written so you can swap the protein without breaking the math.

Chicken and rice

The gentlest starting point, and the one vets reach for after a stomach upset. Boring on purpose.

Beef and vegetables

Higher in iron and fat. Works for active dogs and hard keepers, needs portion discipline for the rest.

Turkey and sweet potato

A grain-free base for dogs that do better without rice or wheat. Sweet potato carries the carbohydrate.
